a little about us... We (the above cast members... Rebecca and Dade Sokoloff, and our 2 pups Wonka and Winter) founded The White Aisle Inc. in 2002 after planning our own wedding. We were on a tight budget and planning a destination wedding (oh to be back in Jamaica...) All of the invitations and favors we loved would have thrown us into bankruptcy, and anything we could afford seemed to be covered with bad bows and hearts. If you've been looking around for awhile, you know exactly what we're talking about. We ended up making all of our stationery and favor items ourselves and bringing (aka smuggling) many of them with us to the island. At the end of it all we kept hearing one line from all of our guests, "You should do this for a living." So... why not give it a shot. We started in late 2002 with a small line of edible favors. We then began slowly adding jewelry and a few other bridal accessories which were made by other small companies we'd found during our own planning process. In Winter 2003 we added our first invitation design, and from there the company seemed to explode. In the years since the print side of White Aisle has grown in leaps and bounds. We now offer a full line of printed goods which are exclusive to our web site. We strive to offer modern ideas of design with a slightly vintage feel. We've stayed small on purpose. It's all about quality control and personal service. In 2006 we branched out and began offering letterpress printing for our designs. It's a joy every time we see a new job come off the press! In 2007-2008 we will start working on a new project which we're very excited about. Since the wedding industry has a season, we are able to close down for one month a year and travel. We've spent some time in Asia and have recently focused in on Cambodia. The situation there is of extreme poverty. In particular the children are victims. They are unable to attend school because their parents cannot afford the supplies required to attend. Many end up working in landfills picking garbage to sell, or being sold into the sex trade by desperate families. While we’re there this Fall, we are going to be splitting our time between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and are working with a few different organizations who are making attempts to help these children. Currently we’re running a program via our web site collecting funds to buy school supplies. $9 puts a child into school for a year. By the time we leave in October, we’re hoping to have collected enough before going to get an entire village of children back into school. We will also be working with a day center which gives vocational training to young women who are currently prostitutes. The hope is that they can use this training to get a job and get out of the brothels. We are going to teach these women how to make bridal accessories like shawls and ring pillows out of local silks, and will be selling the items with all proceeds going back to once when we return in late November. Thanks very much for stopping by, and feel free to contact us anytime with questions or comments. The Sokoloff's |
